Chapter Thirteen

Joy wasn’t sure how long she’d sat on the lounge chair, but she’d have been content to stay there all night. Making small talk at a cocktail party with a bunch of self-important industry people was the last thing she wanted to do. But daydreaming about living in a beach house and having an evening cocktail on the balcony every night kept her quite entertained.

Unfortunately, Prissy found her, ruining Joy’s good time. She dropped into the deck chair beside Joy and let out a disgusted snort. “What are you doing, Joy?”

“Relaxing?” she asked, not quite sure that’s what she’d call it.

“You’re flushing your career down the toilet; that’s what you’re doing.” She held out a martini glass that was filled with pink liquid. “Here. Drink this. It will at least make you look a little less like a loser.”

Joy sat up and took the drink. But instead of thanking her, she said, “What do you want, Prissy?”

“What makes you think I want anything?” she asked. Her brows were pinched, and her lips curled in disgust. “Maybe I just don’t want anyone at my party looking like she’s so uncool that she has to sit by herself drowning in her sorrows.”

“I’m not drowning in anything, Prissy,” Joy said with a sigh. “I actually enjoy listening to the waves crashing below. And since you insisted we show up and then immediately stole my date, I’m doing what I enjoy until you release him.” She smiled sweetly at Prissy. “You get what you want, and I get what I want. It’s a win-win.”

“You’re pathetic.” Prissy said as she rose from the chair. “Enjoy your drink. And don’t expect your date back until after midnight. I have plans for him.” Prissy smirked and floated off back into the house.

Joy stared after Prissy and felt all of her Zen from the ocean slip away. The woman was pure spite. What she didn’t understand was why. Joy hadn’t done anything to her. And she certainly wasn’t a threat. Prissy was a young, gorgeous, sought-after actress. Joy was a forty-eight-year-old mother of three who was just starting out in the business. Was it about Troy?

Joy glanced through the windows and spotted Prissy hanging all over him. Troy, to his credit, looked like he was ready to chew his own arm off just to get away from her. It was time to rescue him. She downed the sweet pink drink Prissy had brought her and then made her move.

Or at least she tried to make her move. Just as she was headed back inside through the open sliding glass door, she was jostled to the side and let out a cry as she lost her footing and started to go down. Two strong hands grabbed her just before she wiped out and pulled her upright, setting her back on her feet.

“Whoa, there. Are you all right?” the man asked.

“Yeah. Thanks for that. Wiping out would’ve been a little more humiliation than I could handle tonight.”

He chuckled and said, “Happy to help, ma’am.
